"DEI" has been used as a buzzword, a dirty acronym, a political tool. First, people of color, transsexuals, drag performers, women, handicapped were vilified. The second step was to label them all DEI; lastly, a movement to push them all underground. Project 2025 comes to mind. You should pick up a copy. In contrast, the words Diversity, Equity and Inclusion are three powerful, positive words.
Historically, DEI was introduced during the civil rights movement the 1960's in the United States to create equal opportunities for marginalized people and protect them against discrimination. Most recently, in 2021 President Joe Biden signed an executive order called ‘Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility in the Federal Workforce’. In January, President Donald Trump in his attempt to erase all of Biden's work reversed the order and banned DEI and started calling it out of all aspects of government and private sectors.
But what exactly does DEI mean, and why should it matter to you? Whether in the workplace, in schools, our government or in our communities, DEI is about fostering a culture where EVERYONE has the opportunity to thrive. Let’s break it down why Diversity Equity, and Inclusion are important:
Diversity: The Beauty of Differences
Diversity refers to the presence of differences within a given setting. This can include race, gender, age, sexual orientation, abilities, backgrounds, and experiences. A diverse environment values the unique perspectives that each person brings to the table. When we embrace diversity, we unlock creativity, innovation, and a broader understanding of the world around us.
Equity: Leveling the Playing Field
Equity is about fairness and ensuring that everyone has access to the same opportunities. Unlike equality—which assumes that everyone should receive the same resources—equity recognizes that different people may need different types of support to succeed. Think of it like a race: some people start further behind due to systemic barriers, and equity ensures that they have what they need to catch up and thrive.
Inclusion: Creating a Sense of Belonging
Inclusion goes beyond diversity by ensuring that all individuals feel welcomed, respected, and valued. It’s one thing to be invited into a space; it’s another to feel truly seen and heard. Inclusion means actively working to dismantle barriers and create an environment where everyone feels safe to contribute and participate fully.
Why is Politics Attacking DEI?
DEI initiatives have faced increasing political scrutiny and opposition. Some argue that DEI programs promote division or prioritize certain groups over others. Critics often claim that these initiatives are a form of political correctness gone too far. However, at its core, DEI is about fairness and inclusion, not exclusion. Political attacks on DEI often stem from a misunderstanding or fear of change, as well as broader cultural debates about identity, privilege, and systemic inequality. Despite these challenges, it’s critical to continue advocating for DEI principles to ensure a more just and equitable society.
What Does DEI Mean for You?
DEI isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a mindset and a commitment to making our workplaces, government, schools, and communities better for everyone. Here’s how you can embrace DEI in your own life:
Educate Yourself – Take the time to learn about different cultures, histories, and experiences. Listening to diverse voices helps broaden our perspectives.
Speak Up – If you see discrimination or exclusion, advocate for those who may not have a voice. Speak up for DEI initiatives and support organizations and businesses that uphold them. For example, Target is getting rid of DEI initiatives yet Costco decided to stand by theirs.
Create Inclusive Spaces – Whether at work, in social settings, or within your family, strive to make others feel welcomed and valued.
Support Equitable Policies – Whether it’s voting for policies that promote fairness or implementing equitable practices, small actions can make a big impact.
A Future Built on DEI
A nation that embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion is one that benefits us all. By recognizing and celebrating our differences, ensuring fairness, and fostering inclusion, we create stronger, more innovative, and more compassionate communities. DEI is not just a set of principles—it’s a path to a better future for you.
In closing, if you are not Elon Musk or President Trump then chances are you have or will benefit from supporting and being a part of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
